I was surprised to read that Sheffield's department of biblical studies was "outside the main centres of biblical scholarship".
With 25 academics and 110 research students, it may be the largest group of biblical scholars in the United Kingdom. It is rated Grade 5. Three of the top seven international journals in the field are edited in Sheffield. More academic books in biblical studies are published in Sheffield than in any city on the face of the globe. Is it a main centre or isn't it?
