Ancillary staff support

七月 5, 1996

Iwrite to associate the Transport and General Workers Union with the battle against cash cuts in higher education (THES, June 28). Attention may have centred on mortar boards but the T&G is playing an active role in the joint campaign for more funding.

Last week's Westminster and Glasgow rallies were joined by cleaners, gardeners, porters, catering, security and administrative staff. They take a pride in their work for their colleges and universities. They want to keep up standards.

Unfortunately it is the amount of work they have to do - as higher education has expanded - that has gone up. Their living standards have gone down. Pay is now well below the European Decency Threshold, and declining.
