About University of West Alabama
The University of West Alabama is a public university based on a 600 acre rural campus in the city of Livingston, just fifteen miles from the state border with Mississippi. Founded as a college for women in 1835, UWA admitted its first male students in 1915.
Undergraduate academic study is divided between the colleges of Business & Technology, Education, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and divisions of Nursing and Educational Outreach. There are also four master’s programmes available at UWA at the school of Graduate Studies, and an online MBA.
An amenity on campus is the university single screen cinema, which has one theatrical showing per day and charges just $6 for student tickets. There is also a fitness centre for UWA students, and dedicated career and counselling services.
Homecoming week is a major occasion on campus, and events include the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, talent show Serendipity, and the Homecoming Festival and Tailgate before a day of sports matches.
Athletics teams are known as the Tigers, and compete in the NCAA Division II. In total there are nine men’s sports programmes and ten women’s, including volleyball and triathlon. Built in 1952, American football games are played at the Tiger Stadium, which can seat up to 7,000 spectators. There is also an eighteen hole disc golf course on campus, known as the Tiger Trail.
In 2016 UWA was named as one of four universities nationwide to receive a $3 million education grant towards the the recruitment and training of teachers in rural areas.
The university colours are red and white, and its motto is ‘do something that matters’.
