About Soran University
Soran University was established in 2009 by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
There are five faculties within the university: the faculty of arts, faculty of education, faculty of law, faculty of science, and the faculty of engineering. Each faculty is divided into a number of departments, which offer a range of courses at bachelor, masters and doctoral level.
The Scientific Research Centre is a joint academic initiative between Soran University and the University of Leicester in the UK. The centre was founded in 2013 in order to develop scientific research in Kurdistan in the fields of applied and human sciences. Research at the centre is focused primarily on petroleum geosciences but extends to include the fields of ecology, chemistry, environment, molecular biology, paleoclimatology, mathematical modelling and GIS.
The Academic Relations Directorate is responsible for overseeing and improving the university’s international relations. The university has developed partnerships with higher education institutions around the world to facilitate academic and scientific exchanges. Students are given the opportunity to study at one of the university’s partner institutions for a semester or a full academic year.
As its name suggests, the university is located in Soran. Soran is the capital of the Soran District and is situated in the triangular area of land between Iran, Iraq and Turkey. The city is surrounded by a number of mountain ranges including Hassen Bak, Hendrin, Zozik, Bradust and Korek.
