About Hilbert College

Hilbert College in the town of Hamburg, New York was originally founded as a teacher training school in 1957. Today Hilbert is a private liberal arts college run by the members of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church. The school was named after Mother Collette Hilbert, a Franciscan nun of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph, who were responsible for establishing the school to train members. In 1964 women from outside the catholic faith were allowed to join for the first time and in 1969 the college began admitting men. This led to an increase in student numbers and the creation of a new campus. The college started awarding four-year bachelor’s degrees in 1992 and in 2011 the college opened its first graduate programs.

Today Hilbert College serves a relatively small number of students, most of whom study undergraduate degrees. The college offers around 16 undergraduate majors and 16 minors in a wide range of subjects from business management and accounting to forensic science and rehabilitation services. There are also master’s level programs available in public administration and criminal justice administration.

The college campus covers 60 acres in a suburban setting in the town of Hamburg, just 20 minutes away from Buffalo, New York. There are 11 main buildings housing the college’s academic and residential facilities. The campus also has sporting and leisure facilities as well as the Swan Auditorium and the Hafner Recreation Centre which provide students with the opportunity to relax and engage with some of the college’s cultural offerings.
