About B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology
Established in 1984 as Crescent Engineering College and subordinated until 2009 to first the University of Madras and then (from 2001) Anna University, B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology attained university status on its 25th anniversary and took its current name in 2017.
The university is located in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India.
The 50-acre campus is based in what it calls "the greenest spot of Chennai", next to Anna Zoological Park. It "aspires to be a leader in education, training and research in multidisciplinary areas of importance and to play a vital role in the socio-economic progress of the country in a sustainable manner" and proclaims a mission to "blossom into an internationally-renowned institute".
Accredited at A Grade by India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council, it was ranked 79th among engineering colleges in the 2018 National Institutional Ranking Framework. A survey in 2018 of India’s private engineering colleges rated it second, with particular strength in infrastructure and in 2019 it was rated Best University by the Rubber Skill Development Council.
Of its 12 schools across a range of disciplines, five are headed by women. Sahol Hamid the vice-chancellor since 2017, had a deprived and gangster-ridden youth while living in Malaysia. His life story inspired the 2015 feature film Chowrasta.
Student achievements have included creating what was once the world’s largest recycling logo with 1,726 participants, winning the All-India universities Men’s Ball Badminton championship and, in February 2019, designing the Crescent SAT satellite prototype which was launched 30 kilometres into space.
The college has dedicated grounds for cricket, football as well as courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton.
