About Tokyo Woman’s Christian University

Tokyo Woman's Christian University (TWCU or Tonjo) is an independent Protestant university in Tokyo, Japan established in the 1880s. The founder Nitobe Inazō believed that Japanese women should be provided with education opportunities.

The campus is made up of seven registered cultural properties including the main building, a garden, open spaces and a small forest.

TWCU is divided into 12 departments for undergraduates. These include the department of literature and culture, philosophy, international relations, psychology and mathematics. The university focuses on a liberal arts method of teaching. The graduate school offers programmes for masters and doctoral students.

There is Career English Programme where students take classes taught in English and develop writing, debating and presentation skills.

The university has partnerships with institutions around the world including the University of Wollongong in Australia, Sungshin University in Korea, McGill University in Canada, Scripps College in the US and the University of York in the UK among others.
