About Christian Brothers University
Christian Brothers University is a four year collegiate institution based in the city of Memphis, Tennessee. Its 75 acre wooded campus site is just four miles east of the city’s downtown, which is a cultural and social hub, known for its blues and rock n’roll music history and the month long celebration of its heritage, Memphis in May. CBU is of Roman Catholic affiliation, and one of 560 education centres under the De La Salle Christian Brothers umbrella.
Academic programmes are divided between the schools of arts, engineering, business and sciences. During senior year of study at the School of Sciences, students will partake in an internship programme attached with either a senior member of faculty or an established research professional in the Memphis area. In the past students have undertaken projects at institutions such as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Memphis Zoo.
There are thirteen majors and twenty seven minors available at the School of Arts, from anthropology to women’s studies. The recently built Rosa Deal building for Arts courses is a cutting-edge institute on the Parkway campus, architecturally combining a classic design with an expansive glass window walling. In the graduate field the school offers a master’s degree in Catholic studies, designed to provide the Mid-South with an effective programme educating the next generation of ministry and religious scholars.
From 2005 CBU has hosted talks on peace and non-violent action at the Dr. Gerard A. Vanderhaar Symposium in recognition of the former faculty member’s contribution to the field. There is also a Peace Studies minor programme at the university, which Dr. Vanderhaar was instrumental in establishing.
