About Cameron University
This institution was established as The Cameron State School of Agriculture in 1901 and named in honour of the Rev. E.D. Cameron, the first state Superintendent of Schools in Oklahoma.
For the first few years it offered a range of education levels but in 1941 high school courses were discontinued and Cameron became solely a junior college.
As the range of studies available continued to grow, the institution quickly outgrew its first name and became known as Cameron University in 1974. Today the university is primarily located in Lawton, Oklahoma, and offers more than 50 degree courses to its student population of over 5,000.
The university campus has seen huge investment in recent years which has resulted in the construction of the Cameron Village, a new student accommodation complex, the Cynthia S. Ross Hall which houses the Department of Business and Graduate Programs, and even the new Bentley Gardens, a 2.6-acre common that provides a fantastic outdoor leisure area for students.
Sports are a huge part of the life of a Cameron University students, and there are 11 sports teams representing the university in a variety of different disciplines. The men’s basketball team won the 1980 NAIA basketball championship, while the golf team became the national champions in 1983.
Notable former students include US Army General Doug Brown, and T.W. Shannon, the first African American Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. A number of sports stars have studied at Cameron University too, including basketball player Billy Paultz, American football player John Brandes, and Major League Baseball pitcher Jason Christiansen.
