About SUNY Plattsburgh

The State University of New York at Plattsburgh is a liberal arts college in the far north east of the state.

Founded in 1890 as Plattsburgh Normal and Training School, a teaching and nursing institution, the college was burnt down by a fire in 1929 and rebuilt three years later. It began to award four-year degrees upon becoming part of the state university system in 1948.

Plattsburgh is right on Lake Champlain, which separates New York from Vermont, and the university is just 25 miles from the Canadian border and 65 miles from Montréal, the bilingual capital of Québec, and one of the most international cities in North America. Also near the Saranic River, New York’s Adirondacks Mountains and Vermont’s Green Mountains, SUNY College’s 255-acre campus enjoys some excellent views.

Its courses range from biology to broadcast journalism, criminal justice, expeditionary studies, geology, environmental studies, human development & family relations, medical technology, music and nutrition. Student-staff ratios are around 15:1.

As well as more than 60 programmes for undergraduates and postgraduates, the college offers a wide variety of internship opportunities at organisations such as IBM both in the US and abroad.

SUNY College alumni include Tim Robins, who starred as Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption and won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Dave Boyle in Mystic River, Dave Annabel, who played Justin Walker in Brothers & Sisters and Aaron Lewis in Reunion, and Anthony Weiner, a former Democratic congressman and New York City mayoral candidate.
