About St John Fisher College

Saint John Fisher College is a private, Catholic college founded in the city of Rochester, New York state in 1948. The college was originally set up by members of the Basilian Fathers (a community of priests and laypeople who focus on education and evangelization) with the help of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, James E. Kearney. The college was run by the church until 1968 when it became an independent institution. The first women were enrolled in 1971.

Today Saint John Fisher is a busy private liberal arts college in the Catholic tradition of higher education. The college is home to almost 4,000 students studying a wide range of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The college offers in the region of 35 undergraduate majors with a variety of masters and doctoral programs also available. The college’s academic programs are divided up into five schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, the School of Business, Wegmans School of Pharmacy and Wegmans School of Nursing.

The college is home to 23 varsity teams and the 2,500 seat Growney Stadium hosts Fisher’s football, field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams. The college campus extends over wooded areas and pleasant lawns to the south-east of the city of Rochester. The college’s academic and residential buildings are all on the campus as well as dining facilities, a library and the college chapel. There are also numerous sporting facilities including American football and football stadiums, a baseball field and softball square.
