About Saint Anselm College

Saint Anselm College was founded in 1889 by Abbot Hilary Pfrängle and it is the third oldest Catholic college in New England. The Abbot was invited to set up a school by the Bishop of Manchester “for religious and charitable purposes, for the education of youth, for establishing churches and conducting services therein.” St. Anselm college began teaching philosophy and theology. The first academic building was completed in 1893 after a disastrous fire gutted the nearly-complete building in 1892. In 1895 the state granted the college the power to award academic degrees. The college was keen on being independent and grew its own food on a 100-acre farm on the campus and a Studio of Christian Art was opened in 1893 to sell paintings to Catholic churches.

Today Saint Anselm is a private liberal arts college run by the Benedictine order of the Catholic Church. The college is recognised for the quality of its teaching and the high achievements of its graduates. The college offers 45 majors and around 40 minors at undergraduate level across a broad range of subjects. The college also offers a range of pre-professional courses including pre-Law, pre-Medicine, pre-Dental, pre-Veterinary, and pre-Theology.

The Saint Anselm campus is known for its scenery; situated in Goffstown, New Hampshire, it covers over 450 acres. Around 60 buildings dot the campus, the oldest of which is Alumni Hall which began construction in 1891. The campus has numerous picturesque buildings connected by tree-lined walkways and surrounded by pleasant green lawns.
