About William Carey University
William Carey University is a Christian university based in Hattiesburg and Biloxi, Mississippi, US. It was first founded in 1892 as the Pearl River Boarding School. Multiple fires in subsequent years caused the university to close and reopen a few times.
In 1953, the Mississippi Baptist Convention voted to give the college coeducational status, which resulted in the name William Carey College in 1954. William Carey, was an 18th century British missionary whose decades of work in India earned him international recognition as the “Father of Modern Missions.” The school changed to university status in 2006.
Courses are organised across arts and letters, business, education, music and ministry studies, natural and behavioural sciences, health sciences and osteopathic medicine.
Undergraduate majors available include biology, accounting, Christian ministry, music therapy, intercultural studies, speech communication, mass communication, theatre and others. It offers postgraduate majors in select subjects such as psychology, health information systems and education.
In terms of varsity sports, William Carey student athletes participate in championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field and softball.
Students can join organisations such as the chapel choir, piano ensemble, and the student nurses association among others.
Alumni include Dan Jennings, former manager of the baseball team Miami Marlins, Argile Smith, president of Louisiana College and Chris McDaniel, attorney and Republican politician.
