About Georgia College & State University
Georgia College is a liberal arts university based in Georgia. It is a member of the University System of Georgia, and in 1996, was designated Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University by the Georgia Board of Regents.
The central campus is based in the centre of Milledgeville, which has plenty to offer students. With a plethora of restaurants, museums, art galleries, theatres and music festivals, there is never a dull moment for students.
The academic system at Georgia College is made up of four specific colleges, which are: arts and sciences, business, education and health sciences. Classes are small and around 80 percent of the faculty members have PhDs.
The university library has an impressive manuscript collection of author Flannery O'Connor – an alumna of the university – and of U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell, whose career included serving as director of the Peace Corps when the Berlin Wall fell.
Since 2009, Georgia College has been Georgia's top-ranked public Master's University by U.S. News and World Report.
Nicknamed the Georgia College Bobcats, the sports teams are currently members of NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference. Sports teams on offer to students are: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, dance team, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
The Campus Theatre went through extensive restoration and renovation in 2010, making it home to the Georgia College Department of Theatre Arts. While in 2011, Georgia College opened a Wellness and Recreation Centre for a vast $26 million. The state-of-the-art centre is renowned for its environmentally friendly architecture and facilities.
Notable alumni include Mary Flannery O'Connor, a renowned American writer and essayist, Brantley Keith Gilbert, an American country music singer, songwriter and Michael John Antonini, a professional baseball pitcher, for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
