Duquesne University is a private Catholic higher level institution in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US, set up in 1878. It was founded by Fr. Joseph Strub and the Holy Ghost Fathers.
There are undergraduate programmes in business, education, engineering-biomedical, health sciences, liberal arts, music, natural and environmental sciences, nursing, pharmacy and a pre-med school. Students can choose to study accounting, binary engineering, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, classical civilisations, ancient Greek, Latin, computer science, digital media arts, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, history, journalism, pharmacy, psychology, Spanish, theatre, theology, political science, rhetoric and others.
The 49 acre campus is on top of a hill in Pittsburgh. Students can join any of the 150 student organisations including 19 fraternities and sororities, and use two recording studios, a multipurpose recreation centre and a theater-classroom complex. Duquesne also houses the Tamburitzans, the oldest multicultural song and dance company in the US, which mixes Central and Eastern European dances and music. The campus is also one of the first in Pennsylvania to invest in green technology, such as an ice cooling system that reduces peak energy demands.
Duquesne’s athletics teams participate in NCAA Division I. Students can choose to take part in football, basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming, tennis, outdoor and indoor track and field, lacrosse, rowing, volleyball.
The students at Duquesne come from over 80 countries.
Some famous Duquesne alumni are former Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania Catherine Baker Knoll, German filmmaker Werner Herzog, former Director of the CIA General Michael V. Hayden and British academic and activist Sanaz Raji.
