IN TRADITIONAL modernist cultures of higher education, research and teaching have become separated. These two activities are viewed as oppositional, orchestrated by the RAE, and there are now moves to raise the status of teaching An aspect of this divide, and a means of conflating the binary, may be to direct funding to researching into teaching. As we generate alternative types of delivery, such as distance learning, this seems particularly important.
